Using engines in Daily chess

No, I did not imply that it was. I was saying that the OP might have confused "using an engine" with "using a computer." There are millions of games and databases on computers and the web, and I wanted the OP to feel comfortable with using all the resources except actual calculation of moves.

Thank you MSteen for your post. It was however the actual use of engines to find the best moves, rather than data bases; that I was refering to. I can see how data bases can be of use, but they're not something I'm interested in using either; but everyone to their own happy.png

Some people just willingly to waste their short life time forcing themselve to involve in something that they're not interested in the first place, hmm just like in a relationship that's why lawyers are around, still it's hard to find proofs.

@Sred - But if you are using outside help to choose the right opening or move, what is the point? Where is the fun, where is the satisfaction, in winning if you don't win on your own? Is winning so absolutely important that we don't care how we win?

Maybe this is a generational thing. I learned to play chess when people became better by...playing the game. We read and were inspired by books like "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess," but we didn't look at a book when playing against someone else.

It seems unnatural to me to consult a database or an engine when playing against another person.  That's one reason I play very few games here on this site. I don't want to play against people who use outside help to beat me.

Maybe because of the way I feel about this issue my rating will always be at 730 or whatever it is, and that is just fine with me.  I got that rating because I earned it, and I'm proud of that!

I mean most cheaters will always be above 2000 because they use an engine for help, and, even then, cheaters are pretty rare and are encountered once every couple of days.

On chess.com daily chess you are not allowed to use any type of engine assistance.

However, it is worth noting that any serious correspondence chess (like ICCF tournaments) allow the use of engines. Thus serious correspondence chess is basically a completely different game these days. I personally don't understand what is the point of such game, but each to their own.

Only because they can't police it. It really is intensely stupid.

sometimes you might play a recommended "engine generated move" because it says it will be to your advantage. So, you blindly follow it, expecting your opponent to play what the engine predicts their move will be. But your opponent does not - what good has that done ye ? Don't be stupid - play your own game, if you get beat, so bloody what ? Suck it up and start anew . . .

Can you cheat in daily games?

This was asked and answered above. Using "engines" (Stockfish, etc.) is not allowed during any games on Chess.com (or any other sites I play on), in any time control.

More pedantically/tautologically: if you're cheating, you're not playing a game, you're running a scam. In that sense, it's impossible to cheat while playing a game. (The other person might *think* they're playing a game, but if you're cheating, then they are simply a victim of your scam.)
