Very New and Very Confused, Please Help!

PeacefulViolet
Hello! I’ve wanted to play chess my whole life and only recently was able to receive a few basic lessons from my theology professor. I thought this app would help but I am still very inexperienced and unsure on some things. I would really appreciate any assistance! ♥︎

My questions are:
How do the puzzles work? I’ve never had any practice and have no idea what I have to do to solve a puzzle correctly. I see that I have to make the "right" move or something but how do I know what that move is? And what is 0 White/Black to move? What does the 0 mean?
Do all matches have to be timed? Is there any way to have infinite time? (I’m playing against the computer until I improve to assure that I don’t inconvenience anyone.) And when choosing times, what does 15|10 or 3|2 mean?
Lastly, what is a rating exactly? How is it achieved, determined and/or calculated? And where can I find mine?

I’m currently making my way through the lessons and may be back later with more questions, but for now I would love any help at all with these questions. Advice for playing is also appreciated. Please be nice and remember I don’t know much!

15/10 mwans each play has 15 minutes time in total to make all his moves, the /10 means that you get 10 extra seconds on your chlock after every move you make, so its tuff to lose on time. In Puzzles you just have to find a series of moves which either force the win of material or even the win of the game. In terms of rating: You get 10- 20 points every game you win or lose the same amount when you lose( logic). When you create your account , you can say if you have experience ornot, if you have experience you get a rating of 2000. If you are a starter, you get 800 or 1200.

And i think you can only get 'infinite' time by playing against the computer, but you can also play daily matches where you only have to do one move in 3 days, which means you have lots of time to think😊

There's a nice Help section to answer most questions.

Most puzzles are probably too hard for you until you know the basic rules.

Google things like "fork" "pin" "discovered attack" "removing the defender" and "back rank mate" for an idea.

0 is the number that comes before 1. In other words there's no special meaning.

In the live chess area they have to be timed, but if you play this computer they're not timed.

First number is minutes you start with, second number is seconds you gain after every move. 15|10 means you start with 15 minutes and after every move you make 10 seconds is added to your clock.

Basically it predicts future results based on past results. Mostly it helps pair people of similar ability. The higher the number the better the player is.

By playing games.
With the Glicko formula.
Automatically by the website.

Basically after your rating isn't new anymore, you gain about 10 points for beating someone the same rating as you. (In the beginning it's possible to gain and lose 100s of points in a single game.)

where can I find [my rating]?

After you play games it will appear in your profile here: https://www.chess.com/member/peacefulviolet

Advice for playing is also appreciated.

To start, learn the relative value of the pieces, the opening principles, and how to checkmate with a king and queen vs lone king.
