Wasted move?

I hear over and over that a move should always have a purpose. Is there anytime you just want to move a piece just to see what your opponent does to develop a tactic for next move?

Yes, I still find myself making moves with no purpose at times. Occasionally it's to see what my opponents next move will be, but more often than not I find myself making these moves because I don't always immediately see the correct move to make.

Yes. There are some situations where you will want your opponent to "show his cards" before you commit yourself to a specific line of play.

It's comparatively rare, though.

I mean, I play a3 on move one.....its up to you whether you consider it a waste of a move grin.png

On a more serious note, triangulation, a particularly important tactic (especially in endgames), is when one side intentionally wastes a move to put their opponent in zugzwang.

Like what 1_a31-0 said, triangulation is probably the best example of intentionally wasting a move and many times it is the only way to convert a won endgame!

Yup, I actually used triangulation yesterday to win an KP endgame
