@JudgeDoom -- a +1 for your thoughtful response too. And to echo a point (as I'm very rusty, and I just can't analyze a position fast enough): play slower games. My rapids are blunderfests, and so I just started (like yesterday) playing daily. A 30-mintues game might be nice, but, like you, I don't often have an hour to block off -- with daily I can sit and study a position when I have time during the day, and forget about it when I don't have time.
Let me also recommend Emms' book: DIscovering Chess Openings, which is almost all opening principles.
