A position is simply a “photograph” of any chess game, at any time during any game. If you looked at the photograph, you can see the pieces and what squares the pieces are on is the position. A position is something you can arrange on a chess board. If you were to arrange a position, it would look like this: “King goes on f3 and rook goes on g2. There’s a pawn on h7 and the other king goes on h8. There’s state of the board itself is the position.
