I was going through a bit of a rubbish time on here so I decided as advised to take a break. Read some chess books, Study, watch instructional videos blah blah blah.. Which I did. I’ve read books watched videos, “studied” with very little play if any at all.. And now a few weeks later I’m back feeling refreshed and ready to go.. But apparently I’m worse than ever! ELO dropping like a stone and playing simply awful chess.. I can’t buy a win.. I don’t get it? It’s like I’ve only just started out playing this damn game as a bumbling novice again.. Whats going on?? 🤷‍♂️

Hello Ratt6809,

Im very sorry to hear that but i want to give you an explanation why this could bei. Knowledge is one thing, but using that knowledge effectively is something you might need to relearn. This is normal and should stabilize after a few days or weeks. Additionally, you should keep in mind that regular adjustment phases can slightly setback players, especially since top players can reach over 3300 ELO, which is not intended. Efforts are always made to make the rating system as accurate as possible, and adjustments are necessary. Taking a break from playing can help, but an extended break might mean you need some time to get back into the groove.

I wish you lots of enjoyment on chess.com! Please do not give up. You will NOT regret it in a few months.🧸♟️

"advised to take a break" ++ Bad advice

"Read some chess books" ++ Chess books are no novels, you do not read them, but study them with 2 chess sets, one for the main line, one for variations.
It takes 200 hours for 1 chess book. So if you read more than 1 chess book it is of no help.

"watch instructional videos" ++ Not useful

"very little play" ++ The essence is play - lose - analyse
