When are you no longer a beginner?

All beginners are grandmasters of the king sacrifice. No need to feel bad.

After learning all the topics, I feel that I know a little bit about chess, should not be a novice

When you are new to chess, you are a noob to a beginner, when you are a beginner, you are a noob to an intermediate player, when you are an intermediate player, you are a noob to an advanced player, when you are an advanced player, you are a noob to a professional, when you are a professional, you are a noob to master, when you are a master, you are a noob to a grandmaster, when you are a grandmaster, you are a noob to magnus carlsen, when magnus carlsen says you're a noob, you slap him with a checkmate!

@Caffeineed honestly, i feel like you need to calm down and take it from the start. Per example, youre playing a 30-minute game, you hang your queen after spending 30 seconds on a move. That's understandable if youre feeling frustrated, but you were once a 1000 player. Just whenever someone plays a move, evaluate: what they did, what it threatens, and what you can do about it. Checks, captures and attacks. That way  you wont miss things like this: You see that he is threatening to win your pawn, but you dont see that he just hung his queen. In a 30 minute game you spent 6 SECONDS TO PLAY THAT MOVE. And missed the fact that he hung his queen. You're too angry, sad, or whatever to play good chess. Just take a break, stop for a few days and come back with a fresh mind. Take things from the beginning, analyzing your games when they end and thinking logically. Emotions arent always good in chess.

Good luck!

When you pass 1200, you can proudly call yourself a non-beginner.

play non rated correspondence chess. Slow your chess down, take time to think. Rapid for the new person can be more harmful than good

You have a 1200 daily chess rating, that's not terrible, it's above a beginner rating.

Chrismoonster the OP hasn't played any daily games

First of all, please don't give up. Also, if you can teach chess to others, then you are no longer a beginner.

I have tips to help you improve your chess skills so you can win more games.

-I  offer a  free beginner’s free eBook on my website, www.ChessByLauren.com in case you are interested. The book is about asking questions before each move.

-Learn basic tactics such as the fork, discovered attack, pin, and more.  I offer interactive puzzles on my website: https://www.chessbylauren.com/two-choice-puzzles.php

-I recommend two books for you: “50 Poison Pieces”   and “Queen For A Day: The Girl’s Guide To Chess Mastery.”  Both books are available on Amazon.com.  Both books are endorsed by chess masters!

-If you are serious about chess, I highly recommend you hiring a chess coach to help you.

-Also consider all checks and captures on your side and also your opponent’s side. Always as, “If I move here, where is my opponent going to move?”

I hope that this helps.

Interesting as I am going to use a chess coach. I have my intro zoom call tonight. I gave him two losses to look at as a prelim, and now going forward I will pick out a few matches, and in the notes, mark down my though process, so when we go over the matches I can explain why I did what I did, as if i don't make the notes at the time I won't remember, plus perhaps by writing down my though process before I make the move I won't make the move

I’m 500 games in, am terrible, and would consider myself a beginner. Time to give up?

Let me tell you a bit about myself.I started playing chess in 2019 when I found out there were sites like this one where you could play chess with other people from all over the world. At the time I thought I was decent at chess until I started playing a few games on here and quickly dropped to 600 rating (my true rating was about 200-300) though but I stopped playing games on here and went on the other chess site where my rating was 800-900 smth which pretty much converts to 200-300 rating on here. After two years of casually playing on here and on the other chess site I am now 1300 rapid on here ,so my rating has increased by roughly 1000 points.I am now better than 90% of the active rapid players and 75% better than the active pool of players in blitz ,where as I used to be in the bottom 1%.Sadly I am still a beginner though ,just a much stronger one.I just started taking chess more seriously and studying so hopefully I can improve more in the coming years.Getting out of the 200-300 rating range is much easier than you think ,just keep playing and analyzing your games ,you don't have to "study" yet.I myself improved by playing a lot of games and watching videos on youtube.Find an opening for white and a defence for black so you don't hung your pieces within the first 10 moves. My rating increased rapidly after playing d4 instead of e4 ,because you avoid a lot of traps that you cant notice at the 300's.Also I suggest you play the french defence when you have the black pieces because you can play it against e4 and d4 (although it's not called the french defence in this case). Also I know that seeing your rating stuck or dropping can make you tilt and want to quit. What could help with that is having an alt account for practicing where you dont care about your rating. Now this is probably against the rules ,but let's be honest everyone has a 2nd account even streamers do.I think this rule is mainly enforced when people create accounts with malicious intentions in mind.Anyway I hope this reply helped you! <3

Most online sites seem to categorise intermediates starting around 1400, so anything below that could be considered beginner level.

Although there’s a huge range in skill between a 300 and a 900, the time it would take both to get to 1400 is probably less than you’d think!

When are you advanced?

No hard definitions. Google image search "chess elo brackets" and you'll see some graph charts assigning each rating range to a loose skill bracket. Advanced typically comes in around 1800 on these charts, with Expert starting at 2000 and Master at 2200.

80 point drop in one day. I’m done

i dropped from being 993 to 800 in a day, 1093 to 1006, and i'm still playing blitz.

It doesn't matter about your elo, just have fun

He's 1200 because he hasn't played any daily games yet, that's a starting point

Having alts, ANY alts, is against chess.com TOS. I would create an account on another site and just play for fun there. Also streamers and other people who publicize they have two accounts either have permission from chess.com support or are just plain stupid.

Just so you know it took me years to break 1000 (OTB) just like @B1ZMARK... everyone was once a beginner (I still am, hanging pieces at near 1900 now)

200+ points above my rating. That's always the boundary for me.

stassneyking

It would probably help to get some guidance from a coach or stronger players. I'm currently offering free 30 minutes sessions for players who want to improve. Message me if you are interested.
