When playing with a friend

I am new to playing online with friends. My question is:
When I invite my friend to play, he accepts, then we start a game..
The issue is:
Whenever either I make a move or he makes a move, I can see his move, but the screen flips to a default new game start screen and the only way to continue the game is to hit the games in progress tab, and click on it to get back to our active game by selecting it again. Also the new game defaults to a "3" day game.
Is this because we only have a "free account" ?
How do we play a normal game where we see each others move in real time without having to flip back and forth to the actual game after either one of us makes a move.

In your settings, you have the option to stay on a game after you move or move to a new game.

Most people make a move and want to go to other games.
