When should you learn a new opening?

Hi,

Soooo, I have an opening for white (queens gambit) and Pirc defence when I'm playing black. I'm still a noob and I enjoy playing them, my question for the vets is do you need to know many openings? Or is it all about having a sturdy opening WITH a solid mid and endgame?

Keen to hear thoughts and opinions.

Hello dearest, for me it is a smattering of everything that you need to know about tactics, openings.
And so many other things.
And?
And no good evening.

You don't need to know many openings at all. I made it to the 1200s with fewer openings than that. (I knew the first 3 moves of the Italian as white and would just kind of mimic that basic idea as black if my opponent played the Italian, otherwise I had nothing specific planned.) There's no real need to learn new openings. While you can do it for fun, it's not anywhere close to being a requirement for improving. Focus more on hanging pieces on both sides of the board, etc.

TL;DR focus on growing you abilities in the mid and endgame pre-1200

You should learn about 2-5 openings for each side of the board pre-1200. It is very important for you to learn a good mid and endgame before you learn a variety of openings. After you surpass 1200 you should try to expand the amount of openings you know.

Interesting feedback everyone. @catmaster0, I like what you said about focusing more on hanging pieces on both sides of the board. That's a very good point because sometimes either player can make a move and forget that it was protecting something else and after they move they've now left a piece hanging.

@ChessGamer2296 mid and endgames..got it! Looks like I know how I'll be specifying my puzzle routine now thumbup.png
