Why do we put the king in check as opposed to just capturing the king? It’s very confusing!

King can never be captured. You win by having the king in check with no possible escape/no legal moves.

Nope, checkmates happen all over the board. But the edges are most common.

If players could capture the king outright, it would create abrupt and unexpected endings that could reduce the depth of play. As it stands, the goal to reach a checkmate gives both players time to maneuver carefully, making the game more structured and strategic.
