Why is this not Checkmate

I assumed at move 46, I had Checkmate? There is no safe move for White King.

ThinWhiteDuke85

I'm a beginner but looking at that, the White King can't move, but at Black move 46 Kb5 the White King is not in check and white can still make a legal move with another piece which he/she does.

Ohh, so although the King couldn't move, it wasn't actually in Check.....got it....that makes sense..damn......

I just checked and you have the black here. At your move 45 (at move 46 you have moved your king so it can't be you are thinking about that position), it is true that white king doesn't have a single square, but white king is not in check, so of course it is not checkmate.

ThinWhiteDuke85

That's the only thing I can see wrong. The White King isn't in check but yet can't move. It's actually an interesting problem, not something I've yet come across in a game.

Thanks for posting though, all these little problems are good to look over.

You did. You got the same situation before the very first move. Your king can't move but is not in check

The black king can go to a5 or a6.  Therefore, this is not checkmate.

Sade_177

A king must not have anywhere to go or any piece that can stop the checking piece. The king must also be in check.

What ChessMaster17s said; "The King MUST also be in check.
