Why is this the best move ?

So why is Nc6 better move than d6 ? My reason behind moving that pawn is that I'm opening diagonals for my bishop so it can be developed while I also attack the pawn at e5, my pawn is perfectly defended so I don't see why is the knight a better move. Is it because of course it achieves the same (attacking the pawn while developing a piece) but also because the knight at that position is not being attacked ?

Hi! Nc6 is better because after d6 white can take that pawn on d6 with check.

Here's an example of how the game could potentially continue

I didn't put this through an engine to see if black is winning but it looks like white is up a piece

Obviously if 2...Qxc7 3. Nc3 and black is maybe a hair ahead in development for the price of doubled pawns

How did you manage to get in this position?

That's what I'd like to know!

Great question. It looks like it would have come from a King's Gambit, but with White 2 tempi ahead. I'd guess it was 1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. e5 Ng8 5. Qe2.

That was my guess, but thought I'd ask

1. exd6+ ...(you have to defend king from queen's check so you can't capture the pawn) 2. dxc7

you lose a pawn
