Bunkhouse

I didn't see a bunkhouse feature on this site, nor a thread about bunkhouse so no hating please.

It would be so cool if chess.com made a Bunkhouse application for the site. I used to play with my friends in highschool all the time and had a blast, it adds a really fun twist to the game.

For those of you who don't know what bunkhouse is I shall explain.

Bunkhouse is played with two standard boards side-by-side and four people in teams of two. After deciding who will be what color, your partner plays as the oposite color so that each side has a black player and a white player.

Each board then plays out individually like a normal match. Now here's the twist part: when you take an opponents peice you give that peice to your partner. On his or her next move they can place it anywhere on the board except for their opponents last two rows, replacing their move. When either player puts the king into check the game has been won.

I am not sure on the time limit, but I believe my friends and I always played with five minutes on the clock. I know it's a short amount of time because it's speed based.

I love this game and haven't played it in forever. Anyone with me?

I'm pretty sure it's called "bughouse". It would be nice to see that feature on the site.

I have also heard it called bughouse and it does sound like fun!

When we used to play it back in the late 70's we called it Bughouse, and you were allowed to place pieces anywhere on the board that was not already occupied by another piece including your opponents last two rows. The game was not over until you checkmated the other king.

Sounds cool. But I don't think it will be added- otherwise half of chess.com will be clamoring for their other favorite variations to be added, and poor Erik will never see a bed again...

I've also heard it called Bughouse, I first knew it as Bunkhouse. It could be because my friend used to have a slight speech impediment... And I think the rules vary, thats just how we played.  And yeah I meant checkmated, I was being rushed out of the house. :)

It sounds like it would be fun to play.

Maybe they could add an unrated open variation option where the players can set up boards and rules to play however they can agree to. That way everyone can play their varitations without killing the mods.

Ex:

imput "number of boards"                         imput "number of players"

imput "initial board setup"                        imput "movement options of Knights"

imput "movement options of Queens"        imput "capturing abilities of pawns"

imput "means of gaining pieces"                imput "placement of gained pieces"

I would suggest if anything along these lines is somehow implemented, that people be able to save setups that they have made.

just check, not checkmate?

only five minutes?

sure, sounds fun!

I'm clear with everything except "When either player puts the king into check the game has been won" Are you sure it isn't checkmate? Because the games doesn't sound like they'll be very long if you can just ram your queen in next to your opponents king and win.

This sounds fun. I've never heard of it before, but then I'm a generation less experienced than alot of players here.

as idea its nice but probably this won't be done in the near future, since dev already have said they will keep improving normal chess setings befor even thinking on other chess variants.

sound a lil bit like shogi

The rules for winning in bughouse are the same as for winning in normal chess (checkmate, time-out). There is the special case of "kinging" where a king can be captured to obtained victory, but this most likely a preference rule in certain groups; I haven't seen it used online. Its fun, and it can (arguably) improve tactical vision, but it will warp your chess as many well-known principles are not advisable in bughouse.

I corrected my self in a previous post guys... I meant checkmated. Although I have played King Capture games like what Nimzo33 is talking about, and Bughouse could be played that way.

so where could you play bughouse on net?

From what I heard, the best place to play online bughouse is the Free Internet Chess Server or FICS. I've never played there myself, so I can't vouch for it.

Can someone explain in simple words how this is played for my sake?

Sure, basically its a game between two teams of two players each. You always play the opposite color of your teammate. Now:

1. A piece captured is given to your teammate, it should match the pieces he moves.

2. instead of moving, a player may place a piece (given by his teammate) on any legal square of the board; even giving check if he or she wishes.

3. There are specific rules too such as pawns placed on the eighth rank do not promote, and you can't place pawn on the first rank. Most other rules are the same as in normal chess.

4. Bughouse is always played with time controls, usually fast ones to prevent piece waiting.

One rule that i've seen as optional is drop mate. Some people play drop mate which is when a piece can be dropped for a mate.

The group I play in calls that the kiddie version. I personally believe it takes out half the fun out of the game.

Edit: Kiddie version = no drop mate.

I've played both versions. I prefer drop mate, but no drop mate is pretty difficult to adjust to playing after exclusively playing drop mate.

When I playedyou couldn't drop in the last two lines. It was more difficule. Time was usually to 5 minute blitz.
