can a pawn that's dropped on the second rank move two squares on its first move as if it started on that square?

It was funny.  In one of my bughouse games, my opponent had 6 pawns on the 7th rank and lost.

Thats a good question! If I had to guess I would assume no. The rule is that a pawn may move two on its first move, right? pawns don't get that when placed anywhere on the board, so I don't see it happening even if it was placed on the second rank. I could be wrong, but this makes sense to. (surprisingly, in all my games of bug, I've never seen this incident o.o)

That really is a good question. I've never experienced it either. At first i was going to say "yes" because the pawn didn't move, it was played, which is probably a technicality. However i thought like Nimzo33, if it was played elsewhere, then shouldn't it get to move two spaces too? The way i've played it, pawns can't be placed on the 1st or 8th rank. So drop it on the 6th, and with a surprise move later in the game, jump two spaces and get a queen! But this shouldn't happen, so i changed my mind and say "no."

I would think this question has been asked. So maybe somewhere there is a rule that says it may move two if it has been placed on the 2nd rank of the side that dropped the pawn there.

I've played both versions. I prefer drop mate, but no drop mate is pretty difficult to adjust to playing after exclusively playing drop mate.

 @ davebarnard

I've always heard it called bunkhouse and have always called it bunk house.

Not sure if it means much, but I'm actually working on building a bunkhouse application in Java right now. so. you might get your wish.

I'm clear with everything except "When either player puts the king into check the game has been won" Are you sure it isn't checkmate? Because the games doesn't sound like they'll be very long if you can just ram your queen in next to your opponents king and win.

This sounds fun. I've never heard of it before, but then I'm a generation less experienced than alot of players here.

Wow, you've never heard of bughouse, it's a very popular variation. They even have bughouse tournaments. But yes in bughouse you have to checkmate to win, not check. What's interesting is you have to checkmate with a piece directly next to the king or a knight because otherwise your opponent can place a piece to block it, or stall until he gets a piece.
