It depends on who you are talking to.
Chess is the best game in this universe
I'd be willing to say it's one of the two best games man ever invented, the other being poker. I have three criteria for a great game: easy to learn the rules, deep strategy/tactics, and lots of variants.
I'm still looking for a third game that meets those criteria.

i disagree. I am of the opinion chess 960 is better
but it is still considered chess, besides 960 would not be here if not for its ancestor

Good thing you said this universe. Because according to Multiverse Theory there are other games better than chess...in fact, an infinite number of better games. (Maybe.) LOL

An important point that you hit upon is that the game be deep, and yet have simple rules. That's what's so great about chess: it's "naturally" complex if you will. Any game can be made hard -- just make 50 complicated rules, and movement patterns as unintuitive as possible, and that'll be tedious and confusing for anyone to play; but chess on the other hand gives you a very simple goal: to checkmate. All of the strategies in chess are just ways to achieve that, and it's very cool how even positional advantages, that could exist way out on the queenside, are just part of the flow to the real goal of checkmating the king. You start with a simple set of rules and goals, and it's all logical deduction from there.

Man,back on Skrooki 5 we had games that makes chess look like that game where you stare at a dead squirrel and see who gets bored first.
Then why don't you play those games instead of chess.

"Best" is such a general term and so open to opinion, that this question is moot. After playing Orion's Belt for a few weeks, I considered chess to be a kid's game in comparison. Orion's Belt is to chess, what chess is to checkers. However, Orion's Belt and chess variants with additional pieces and larger boards are harder to master, so it's open to opinion. How about Alpha Centauri (a video game by Sid Meiers)? It combines war strategy with a vast technology tree, has seven factions all playing at once, diplomacy, economics, strategy and technology all rolled up into one game. Unfortunately, it wasn't as popular as the Civilization series and never really "took off". I also liked Archon, a video game that came out in the 1980's. It was like battle chess, but with interactive battles, magic spells and a board with squares that changed colors (the colors changed the power of the pieces). That was another awesome chess-like game that never really "took off". Chess is awesome though and has always been one of my favorite games. The fact that it doesn't require a computer to play, is very inexpensive and is known worldwide, makes it very appealing, as you can always find an opponent around your level. The same can't be said about Orion's Belt, Alpha Centauri or Archon, unfortunately.

There are a handful of other board games played around the world similar to chess.
Do you agree ....... or disagree
