I didn't quite like how this turned out....but I've had the idea of writing chess-inspired poetry for a while, and I guess this was my first attempt.

I don't actually think of chess in martial terms, so this poem, in being quite literal in certain ways, doesn't really reflect how I feel about the game. Maybe someday I'll write another one, but for now, this is my attempt.

The Game

Two armies, valiant, gather for the fight;

the watchful soldiers peer ‘cross battle lines.

That it be judged, whether it be black or white

who claims the victory coveted so fine.

First, all towards the center straight advance,

That these bold warriors for quick action stand

And sharp may be, prepared for all the plans

To quash their enemies of faraway lands.

The battle ripens; strategies grow complex.

Strength lies in numbers. All aim towards the king,

and ‘round him all plans weave, attacks and checks.

The pawns march, towards distant borders pacing,

until a king encircled is. All defense vain.

A clash so brave, at last, is one side’s gain.
