DESIGN A CHESS PIECE

Yo! This is the design-a-chess-piece workshop!

I want you to come up with an entirely new chess piece that could be used on the board and contribute to the chess army. What will it be called? How will it move and capture? What does it look like? What existing piece will it replace in the starting position (the queen is suggested)?

Last but not least, who will come up with the most creative piece? Evaluation starts at the end of April.

StockfishEngine

the suicide bomber.

it's a bishop, but it can explode and kill everything in the adjacent squares.

This piece is the tiger, which replaces the queen. It jumps over pieces to attack anything on the perimeter of a 5x5 area. If the knight in this diagram were a tiger it would be attacking all of the rooks.

I would give it a value similar to a queen. It may not be able to travel as far in one move, or attack pieces that are right next to it, but being able to jump over pieces to reach so many squares is a big advantage. From one of the 4 central squares it could always give check in a single move (unless of course one of your pieces is on the only square you could check from). It would also be very hard to trap, moreso than a queen. And it has tiger power.

This piece...can never be captured.

Hmm sounds like infested terran on starcraft.

How about

1 - A piece that can temporarily hover for a few moves as it's special defence against attack, but has limited range of movement.

2 - A Knight that can cloak from the enemy, for a maximum of 2 moves each game. The opponent will not know where it is or moved to unless its move captures their piece.

3 - Higher level pieces that can turn into multiple smaller pieces. E.g, a Rook that as a move can also be replaced by two adjacent bishops on either side as long as the space is clear.

4 - Surge. This piece moves the same as the queen only it moves just 3 spaces at maximum.

5 - Arbiter. This piece cloaks all pieces next to it that are friendly. It can move the same as the King.

6 - Queen with hit points. A stronger queen that takes multiple hits to be captured. Rooks, Queens, and the King can capture it immediately. Bishops and Knights will reduce it's strength but are lost when they attack. After which any attack will capture it.

7 - Drone. This piece looks like a short bug that moves one square at a time with no ability to attack, but when it gets to it's chosen spot, it can morph to a sunken colony that can never leave it's spot, but can capture anything one square away. It only capture one selected piece at a time.

8 - Dark archon. A large round red piece that has no attack, except it takes over any enemy piece next to it and makes it one of your pieces. It can move one square at a time and replaces the queen.

9 - Interceptor. This piece moves quickly around the board by hoping over two or four squares at a time. It's "attack" is to lock or freeze an adjacent enemy piece for 3 moves so that the piece cannot move, but also can not be harmed either.

It can be pinned and then captured, or it might have to be traded off to stop a threat.

@chessplayer11- I like the Surge.

AlCzervik

Well, I didn't see this going 15 pages.

AlCzervik

But, if you play against him, you will lose.

AlCzervik

He cannot be captured or pinned. He does not trade. He takes when he chooses.

AlCzervik

He also never feels "threatened", no matter where your pieces are.

AlCzervik

^ He'll always be after your queen.

Jeffmon

I think he would like having his own piece. Enough with these little girly pieces.

an interesting piece would be the dragon it could move like a knight but further or the ghost which could move through your own pieces

What about a piece that moves like a Queen but only two to three spaces at a time. It cannot capture, and cannot be captured. It's only purpose is to strategically disrupt opponents' movements, block checks, and help to trap other pieces. We could call it the "Minister."
