Have John Cena promote chess.
Google shows John Cena > Chess

Also, what's even more interesting is the regional data for chess.com:
Who knew that chess.com was so popular in Sri Lanka?

Here's the most interesting graph I've found so far.
There has to be some sort of scientific explanation for why it's so near-perfectly sinusoidal.

At the dips, the trolls are having their annual convention under the bridge.

Look at this one. For some reason, it always peaks in May.

Yeah, but that's easy. Off seaon, post season, and world series happen once a year.

But surely a vast majority of people who search "trolling" aren't referring to the fishing term... Still it could be a reason.
Hmm.
The only thing I can think of for trolling (as on a forum) would be something related to kids and the school year. Each year there will be a group of kids graduating from one school to another and learning these sorts of things.

Yes, similarly there are also clear trends for things like "summer," "shopping," and "snow." Although the last one for some reason shows a huge spike during the 2011-2012 winter, when I don't remember there being a lot more snow than other years.

Hmm.

But it peaks in May though... so maybe kids have more time to troll during summer break?

Yeah, that's a good idea :)
I did a little browsing on Google Trends
As you could see... Chess is dying!
What shall we do?
