At least two. The trick is getting them inside the lightbulb and making sure they're compatable.

The new Light bulbs in California aren't screwable, because they aren't incandescent. They have two small studs on the end and you just rotate and click them in.

You might have to modify the Joke.

They must be very tiny chessmasters to fit in a lightbulb. That said, I think two would suffice.
