Hurting your chess.

Hello out there chess world, there are many different levels of a person's chess ability, but a lot of us want to break through a certain rating.

A 1200 wanting to break into the 1300-1400

A 1800 wanting to break into Expert 2000+

Or a 2000+ Expert wanting to break into Master 2200+.

But are we studying the correct things, are the things we are studying improving our chess, or are the things we are studying hurting our chess.

Well, lets break down chess a bit for a chess player for what you can learn and then we will catagories what it will do to your chess.

Chess is divided into 3 well known parts.

Opening, Middle game, Endgame. Let's use these.

Opening

The opening has 2 majoy factors we can study

-The theory of the opening, which is the branch of moves in the start of the game that is known to be best. A lot of players make the mistake of studying theory to much, without any guidelines into what to study and how much.

A lot of people will say, do not study deep theory until you are +2000 and only go by the opening principles, this unfortunetly is not enough information.

What I like to do to test if someone says opening is more important, is to give them a handicap opening that they cannot prepare for and is bad and if they can beat me.

You can do the same, find someone 200-300+ rating points more then you and test it out.

This is correct in a way though, studying to much thoery will only increase your knowledge of the first stage of the game and will not be very fun.

What you need to do is know (This is for sub 2000s)

-The opening principles (No matter your level).

-The main line of your system (with 2-3 side variations) that isn't deeper then 15 moves.

-Tactical Motifs (Traps)

-The main ideas for you are your oponent in this.

Example.

Beyond 2000, the lines should just be deeper.

What is your chess style? (You need to know)

For example you might be a tactical Wiz, and love a flow of wildness, but because you wanted to avoid theory, you started to play KIA or the StoneWall.

Or a Positional Genius and play the most tactical line in the Sicilian or positions that are not for you.

(Hope you learnt something)
