Is Howard Stern good for chess?

I have been into chess for over 20 years, but now I feel so compelled to play because Howard Stern talks about it daily.  You may not like him, but do you think him taking an avid role in chess helps the game or hinders it?

what the heck does howard say about chess? i'm curious.

He loves the game and basically says that anyone who thinks that it is just some game like checkers is an idiot.  He is a member of something called icc or something.  He even talks about when he gets into a heated game he passes on sex with his model girlfriend!

I think it's great for the game that Howard is talking about chess and perhaps exposing listeners into maybe becoming players.

It was either yesterday or today's show that there was a mention that he recently played the president of the Marshall Chess Club in Manhattan. Howard lost both games but received praise from the prez.

Nope, I listen every day, and he only says good things about chess.  His teacher is actually NM & CM Dan Heisman (here is proof) and he seems quite serious about it, with his rating around 1500-1600 (Knatted, back me up here) - and he's only been playing a little over a year so far...he can get a bit elitist about it, true, but does play on the ICC (Internet Chess Club).  He has a huge following, even on Sirius satellite radio, and I think his endorsement of chess is a great boost to the game.  Think about how many regular Joes are gonna hear him and give chess a shot.  Keep up the good work, Howard! How could he be bad for chess? If anything it speaks to the fact that people can have a duality to their nature. Partying, rock'n'roll and strippers can coexist in the same brain with philosophical pondering, art and chess. Trust me. I know this to be a fact.

Don Imus talks about chess a lot, too, and how he plays it with his little boy.

Good for them. But I don't form my own opinions about chess, or anything else, by what disk jockeys have to say. Just me, I guess.

I don't think it's so much about people forming opinions of things based on what they hear on the radio, so much as breaking down negative opinions that uninformed people may already have. Let's face it - chess has a negative, "geeky" image to the general American public. For someone like Howard Stern to talk about it that much might make someone with that type of image of the game to think "Hmm... maybe it's not so geeky after all". And some of those people might just try playing it because of that.

On a more specific note, I have a coworker who used to play chess regularly, and he's a huge Howard Stern fan. Hearing Howard talk about it inspired him to start playing again, although he doesn't have time to really play a huge amount right now. So people like my coworker are another possible positive impact.

If there are any (which I doubt highly), do you really think they would say so, or, if they did, they would be believed?

Howard Stern's brand of humor may be a bit too crude for some, but I think anyone would have to agree that the guy can be incredibly funny at times. I've always known that he's a very intelligent guy once you get past the whole 'act,' but now I have a little more respect for him for talking so much about our beloved 'geeky' game. Kudos, Howard.
