High numbers can have low significant digits too.

345 =3 Significant digits.

3.99 x 10^4 =3 Significant digits.

1000000 = 1 Significant digit.

hahaha got you lac 2809 =three significant digits lalalalala i got four i got four=1111

Zeros between significant digits are significant digits. So 2809 has four significant digits.

it's also significant if the 0 is past the decimal. 1.0000 has 5 sig figs

 The last number would be seven significant digits since there's not a decimal point between the one, and the zeros.

no its 1 dude, since there is no decimal point, if there was, it would still be 1, only if there was a 0 behind it would it be 8

WilliamIofEngland

You read Harry Potter because there is a chess game somewhere in one of the books and he finds a winning combination!

Go here to learn about significant figures http://www.chem.tamu.edu/class/fyp/mathrev/mr-sigfg.html .

The convention is that a trailing decimal point is used to specify that zeros before it are significant.  Technically a given whole number with more than one trailing zero and no decimal point is ambiguous: 4300 may have 2 or 3 significant figures; in this respect scientific notation is essential. To muddy the waters farther, a number like 2 can be infinitely precise (there are precisely 49 letters between these parentheses).

Significant digits?!  This thread is threatening to become serious again.

It's on the verge of becoming another sign.

You argue over what a sig fig is

You argue wheather or not a win on time counts

You cant seem to know how much time you have left because its not a digital watch, and therefore loose on time

Ben_Dubuque

Is this Topic supposed to make bad players feel bad. Kinda of like calling someone fat if they are over weight like saying they eat the wrong food?

Stupid Topic!!!

Silly. We are making fun of ourselves.

In chess, if you can't make fun of yourself, someone will gladly help.

You lose your king and you blame your red shirt.

Instead of knights, you play with glue bottles.

BobbyRaulMorphy

You call the rooks castles and the knights horseys.

When you hang a piece you repeatedly ask for a draw/takeback/abort.

It takes you several minutes to confirm you've been checkmated.

You still don't get the concept of double check.

When you hear 'sicilian defense' you think of The Godfather.

You think the 'spanish opening' is a pick-up line.

seems a litle odd when you have a fairly high rating making fun of low raters

Off the topic: In an earlier post somebody was talking about their dad. It's funny, I didn't learn chess from my mom or dad, but I discovered it and learned how to play it on my own. I started in 3rd grade (5 years-6 years ago) and I was still a pretty mediocre chess player until 6th grade ended. It was a very long struggle to improve, but my chess coach last year and this year really helped me improve, and now I'm actually a halway decent player now.

What grade are you in now?
