What quirk of human nature

makes it so that the guy I am beating in online chess sends a move every 2.7 days, while the guy who is a rook up and crushing me in an endgame sends a move every 2.7 minutes?  Just wondering.

Less of a quirk and more of a cheapo strategy.   If I've calculated a forcing line/win, I want to see it through then and there  (using conditional moves or whatever else) LEST I forget what I was doing 2 days later.

By delaying your move, you stand a chance of your opponent forgetting what was going on, especially if he has a lot of games going on simultaneously.

Despicable ... yes ... but I've seen this happen often enough :)

See, if I were winning I would stretch it as long as I can to savor the moment.

well I think if you're losing .. maybe you need more time to dedicate to really think about the game.  Sometimes people are doing other things day to day and might sign online to check their email and then have to run and not want to make a move in a hurry.  But if they are doing it on purpose hoping you forget the move you had planned then that isn't cool.

It would be nice to have a private little "note-pad" attached to each game, so you could come back to a game and more easily remember details of your diabolical plans! Wonder if the admin folks could arrange such a thing. Bet if they made that a sweetener for their premium memberships, more folks would purchase them.
