India invented chaturanga...chess didn't become chess until all of it's rules were in place. Those were some other game or form of chess. THis thread should called who invented modern chess...

I am sure many Russians would argue they invented chess and that other cultures were simply moving pieces...

Chess comes from the long, flat, retangular, box  labeled CHESS.  That would be from the closet second shelf on the left end, also marked CHESS.  More recently, it is appearing on my iPAD, iPhone5, Kindle Fire, and laptop in Chess.com.  Chess also comes from the Second Hand Shoppe, but you are advised to count the pieces before you leave the store.  In conclusion, it is one hundred percent certain that, "CHESS CAME FROM SOMEWHERE".  So look there first.

Chess was invented by evolution, like everything else. Makes perfect sense. I think.

Chess originated in Africa

'Western literature admits that the origin of Chess is uncertain. Whenever such a statement is made, experience has taught me that the uncertainty most likely indicates it originated in Africa.'

Besides all the crap here....chess was invented as chaturanga(means cavalry, infantry along with other pieces) in India(Hindustan ) and was used for a period as a peaceful way to sort out territorial disputes between kingdoms........it was then carried by the arabs to europe ....along the way ...several rules were tweaked and added and you have modren day chess.....

i thought lance amstrong invented doped chess... or he should invent that

Doped chess has been around for a while since, some people don't grasp the concept very well, and doped chess players are often confused with regular chess players...

To say India invented chaturanga and not chess is like saying Alexander graham bell did not invent the telephone just because its modren version has undergone a lot of improvization....chaturanga is basically chess...the concept, the goal and how the pieces basically move are the same except for a few minor rule tweaks and additions ......................for convience and proposed legality as also to speed up the game rules like castling etc were added, and the commander in cheif was replaced by a queen as England was ruled by female rulers............................................everything else is just the same..

While in all practicality, you are right sir but, when many people think of chess, they don't think of chaturanga and may not even have the first clue what that is. So, I thought it proper to make a distinction.

It is some what conceivable that you would assume that, everyone frequenting these forums is an educated chess player and knows the history of chess. However, I am willing to bet many do not. So, to simply use the terms chaturanga and chess, interchangably , doesn't do either form, the history of their respective creation, their creators nor those trying to learn, the due justice and respect they deserve...

it came from india

I still thinks it came from Africa. The (African) Moors first brought chess to Spain when they conquered it. From Spain it spread over Europe and later all over the world. The Moors allegedly got it from the Persian who got from the Indians. The history is so old that nobody can tell for sure.

And talking about Indians; Columbus didn't discover America. It was the native Americans (not Indians) who discovered Columbus when he was lost at sea.
