I was thought by the best master.

Without revealing any mystical secrets...this was the start of our training in a place far far away...

I honestly cant remember.

I do remember that at about age 12 I bought I.A. Horowitz'z Golden Treasury of Chess. I seem to remember the way the pieces moved were explained in there? Maybe that's where I learnt from...

All I know, it was before the moon landing.

I learned the basic rules and rules of the game from books but I learned everything I know from my chess teacher Griffin for 3 years.

Hello everyone, I learnt to play chess at a summer school around the age of ten. A fellow student taught the names of the pieces and how they moved etc. Stopped playing for many years; however, my interest has restarted and I play for at least one hour per day, look at tactics and study videos online. I am also a member of a chess club and encourage my son (aged 4) to play. He knows the names of the pieces in two different languages! Kind regards.

I was with my friend at my grandmas when I was 8 and he saw that she had a chess set. I didn't want to learn  how to play but he talked me into it and I'm glad he did lol.

My Dad, when I was 7 or 8. Took me quite a few years to beat him, though the first time I really had him on the ropes, I stalemated the game. A year or two later, watching very carefully for the stalemate, I finally won a game. My son is 3 and I look forward to teaching him, then beating him for years, then losing to him for the rest of my life. I like symmetry.
