Not a single recommendation or explanation on how to you a chess engine. I never owned one and not even sure if we have this on our site or if this is a 3rd party app that people use.
chess engines

There are many available chess engines, google search Stockfish download.
However once you've got that file you'll need to put it into a GUI (an interface). Download Arena 3.5 or another such program, there are a few choices available.
Then load the Stockfish uci into the GUI and it should work.

So first you need a GUI, I recommend the free Tarrasch. Then an engine. Stockfish is the strongest at the moment and it's free. I also like Houdini. You can find guides to use them all over the internet.
Also 1100 on this website is about average strength.
I'll analyze a game if you post the moves, I'm no master but 1400 at the moment. Also, you usually learn more from your losses than your wins if you figure out where you went wrong.

Engines are very good for checking the quality of your own moves - if you're going through an Alekhine game, for example, and you say, "Hey, why didn't he play this move?" stick it in an engine, and you'll often be shown a tactic that you missed (thus solving the mystery)........sometimes you'll be surprised in the opposite direction - the computer will think that your move was better than Alekhine's. Engines are also great for helping you work on your openings because you can throw a main line on the board and look at a list of high quality candidates for both sides.
The main thing you have to remember when you're using a chess engine is that you're using it as a supplement to your own analysis and the analysis of other human players. If it's not helping YOU find moves when the engine is NOT turned on, it's not helping anyone do anything - it's just a computer playing chess against itself.
That said, engines are a marvel - they will show you all kinds of ideas that your puny human mind failed to consider.
I just read the post regarding the rules for this forum and it mentioned not to use chess engines in conjunction with analysis from other players. I am now starting to take this game more seriously because I never would have though about posting on this forum. My question is simple. I am not even sure how to use a chess engine. If they are an important part of the learning process, can some recommened the best chess engine to use. And I am amazed that players in this community would take the time to analyze someone else's game. That is amazing and I thank you in advance for reviewing a game if I am ever brave enough to post one. My rating at the moment is 1105. I am know longer going to play blitz and concentrate on 30 minute games. Can anyone tell me what 1105 signifies as far as beginner, intermediate etc. Thanks
