Constructive Criticism

This is my first attempt at posting a game. I am new to the site and playing Chess. I would appreciate any help you can offer me about this game and where I went wrong…

move 3 was very bad, your best bet is bishop c4 or bishop b5 (if u play bc4 u setup attack on f7 that can be more than irritating and if u play bb5 u enter ruy lopez). next move was fine but u followed it up awfully by allowing knight take e4; thats a severe no no--u cant just give key pawns like that! (unless ofcourse there is some winning variation u see like you give up pawn but knight is then pinned etc). then you push c5 prematurely when u could have castled or played qe2. after that your opponent simply had too many options and kept u on defnse
in conclusion, dont start off by giving away key pawns with no compensation because then u will be in uphill struggle to equalize and dont make moves like c5 when your king is still hanging. wasting tempo is never a good thing

10... Nxe4 is winning for black and while 3 c4?! may not be a losing move it creates more problems for white than for black. It reduces the scope of the B/f1 and that piece runs the risk now of becoming a " bad bishop " and it creates a " hole " in whites position at d4. Black should play 3... Bc5 and prevent white from ever playing the move d4 if possible.

well yes i agree that c4 reduces the scope of the bishop, and d4 could potentially become a hole, but if you had a plan about what you were doing im not sure that d4 really becomes a serious weakness. depends. there could be manouvers like (but not limited to) Qc2, b3, Bb2, rd1, nb5 and d4. But yeah if you jsut play c4 aimlessly then its simply increases the chance that you go wrong somewhere, like you did :)
Hole : A square that cannot be defended by a Pawn. Such a square makes an excellent home for a piece because the piece cannot be chased away by hostile Pawns. Also known as outpost.
With whites pawns on c4 and e4 the square d4 is a hole.

well hello, fellow Atlantan!
I think 3. c4 is fine. its generally better to develop a little faster, but you do make new options for your queen and make a clamp on d5. white doesnt give away advantage imo after 3 c4.
your 5th move was ok....but you wouldve had to take the bishop with the other pawn...BxN dxc3 so if Nxe4 you can play Qd5, hitting the knight and the e5 pawn (when he moves/defends knight you simply play Nxe5)
instead the way you went about getting the pawn back was strained and you let him pin you up on the e file and such, just bad coordination. The rest of the game was fairly easy for black because your pieces were too strained, you had to make constant positional concessions to handle his threats.
People will tend to overestimate how bad your moves were becuase they were nto the typical ways to handle the opening...but theres actually more potential in some unusual moves than most people realize. You have to know what you are doing, however. by move 6 your position was not so much creative and different as it was simply bad.
After 6 dxc3 Nxe4 7 Qd5 Nf6 and since the Q/d5 is hit white cant simply take on e5 now recovering the pawn....
