Why was castling a mistake? And what else did I do wrong? (I played as black)
Nora_1978
I am not sure about that, but maybe the white queen in combination with the white knight could have checkmated you if white sacrifices the rook before , so that the black knight takes it and is out of the way? But maybe I am thinking quite complicated right know, as I am very tired already.

In General you could say: Castling at that moment offered white a few chances to attack the king……

You played a pretty solid game and held a stable advantage however you did give it away a couple of times. Castling was a mistake because after O-O your opponent can play re1 and your e pawn is undefendable, plus castling misses an opportunity to boot his knight to an undesirable square. On move 12 you lost a portion of your advantage by playing a4 instead of nxe4 as this gave white counter play with his knight. On move 23 your opponent could have won a bishop with 23. qb8+ kh7, 24. Ra7 which he did end up playing but by that point knight takes pawn was winning so it didnt matter.

@ddave2150 You are already over 1900 rating, so you can probably use an engine and figure out computer lines and interpret what they mean for the most part.

The human reason 8...O-O?! was not best was because ...h6 was slightly better. Notice that I gave castling the "Innaccuracy" annotation and not the "Mistake" one. It's really not a big difference. On my engine depth (I didn't run it for long), castling was the 3rd best move in that position. If you castle, then white can play f3 to fight for the center and try to blast open their f-file for their rook, but f3 is more about fighting for central control than it is about the semi-open file.

Why is ...h6 better then? It kicks the knight back to the awful retreat of Nh3 and then you could still castle if wanted (although even then that is not "best"). You had a chance to kick away an enemy piece that was active in your territory. If you leave it there, then it's just one more potential attacker near your king. I'm sure you're high enough in rating to recognize which pawn advances are severely weakening to your king and which ones are just ever so slightly weakening, but if not clear, the ...h6 move barely weakens your king at all in that position, so it's more beneficial to kick the knight away with this move. The ...h6 move also maintains your initiative, whereas if you just castle, then white now has the chance to do something productive such as f3 (engine also claimed Re1 was good).

p.s. If you want higher rated players to respond to your forum threads, then write them in a polite, yet professional tone. If other players see you are genuinely trying to learn, then they will be more likely to help you. If you attack people who are already trying to help you (regardless of what their ratings are), then others see that and may be less willing to help someone who doesn't even seem to appreciate the help they've been getting so far.
