Did my opponent cheat?

Hello all,

I am a 1900-2000 level player and just recently I played this game against another roughly 2000 level player, and while the game did end a draw I could not help but feel as if I was facing an engine due to how little opportunity I was given.

Normally, had this position occurred over the board I wouldn't be too suspicious — however with online chess it feels like with every tournament you're bound to come across a cheater. And of course, I know had my opponent been full on using stockfish the whole time I wouldn't have even had a chance, what I suspect is perhaps he used it on and off to try and mask what he was doing.
Obviously, my opponent is higher rated than me and such is going to in most cases outplay me; I understand this completely. But when I analyzed this game he appeared to play many engine moves, hence my suspicion. Any thoughts, whether it be about his or my play, are greatly appreciated!

Was your opponent eavesdropping on you while you were reviewing your anti-King's Indian Defense opening study before your 2020 Washington State Championship round four game?  If not, the answer was no — they were not using foul methods in this game.

I am a somewhat weak player and I match the engine as high as 80-90% of the moves in some (more than half of) games.  Most of the CDC analysis (ok, we know its weak) remarks on my games are 'an alternative is x to y', apart from my screw ups.  The better you are, the more you match the engines.  Throw in a bunch of repetitive moves where there is nothing better and a longer than usual opening line, and the match % goes up more.

There is a place to report suspected cheaters.  But honestly, who cheats out to a draw?

I understand your concerns, but the open forums aren't really the proper place for this type of discussion. (I suspect a mod will eventually find this thread and possibly lock it.) If you're really concerned about this, I'd suggest that you join the club titled "Cheating Forum", where more latitude is given to discussing cheating. You can also find a download link to the PGN-Spy program that you can use for added insight to games of interest. (There are separate threads on how to use the program.)
