I ACTUALLY WON! I was playing a friend who was probaly going easy on me, but I WON! I neglected to write down the moves, because I'd played him 4 times before, and I lost all 4. However I have the final move:

Thank you. I haven't just been shrugging this fourm stuff off. It really shows, seeing that I have a lead in material, and a victory that wasn't time related!Smile

You have been givin so much good advice so far that i need not comment much except to say u need to develop your pieces better both u and your friend used your queen far to much with out using your whole army to fight with think about chess like a team sport eg, basket ball even the very best player on the team cant win the whole game by themselves with out there team and an army at home is still useless to you. And that yasser seirawan book is a good sudgestion mate its a very good book for teaching the basics like 1)space. meaning controling more squares then your opponent 2)time/tempi the ability to use your pieces in such away that u gain more activity then your oppponent faster or make him lose his ability to be active as much while gaining more yourself 3)pawn structure meaning playing the pawns the right way to give u the best chances at a strong game overall and taking advantage of weaknesses in theres i cant remember the other one but u read the book and u will get what i mean....Cool

My friends(except for A friend and B friend) have said that I'm not worthy to play them, so I generally find myself watching other games. Since I can't seem to play when I haven't got access to chess.com, I'm wondering if there's a good way to learn by watching. They recently played this:

You won't learn much by watching your friends.

No you are not sunk. Your friends are not that good in chess! You can learn by watching advance players and try to understand the reason behind every moves. There are books at there that explain move by move writtin by Masters. Here are somes.

  1. Logical Chess: move by move----Irving Chernev
  2. Understanding Chess: move by move------John Nunn

Book on chess principles

  • The Tao of Chess----Peter Kurzdorier ( this is very resouceful for beginners and Amateurs
  • Weapons of Chess-----Bruce Pandolfini ( Don't need a board for this book)

And the classic

  • My System-----Aron Nimzowitsch

Also, any book on Tactics, but I suggests these for beginners

  • Winning Chess Tactics-----Yasser Seirawan
  • 303 Tricky Chess Tactics-------Fred Wilson & Bruce Alberston
  • 303 More Tricky Chess Puzzles-----''  ''
  • 303 Tricky Checkmates--------"  "

and of course alot of playing chess Smile

I'm beginning to think that this post is all one big hoax, xbigboy... you're having a laugh, mate! Spend a little less time writing in these forums and a little more time noticing your opponent has captured your piece... and then recapture!

for example 4 f4 ( allowing the queen out)... JESUS!! You're a piece down.. look at the position! You have to play the most natural of moves, namely 4 Rxg1.

I've lost count now, of the number of times different players have instructed you to be materially frugal... yet you always seem to find a reason not to recapture!

Have you bought or loaned even ONE of the books from the many reading lists that contributors have kindly suggested?

It's no good thinking that you are going to learn chess from some process of osmosis, by talking to people on these forums. At some point you have to open a likely tome, with a real chess set in front of you and spend a month or two assimilating the contents. Buckle down and grind out the hard yards... or just continue wasting your time.  Cry

I won here. Did I get exceptionally lucky, or is this good?

Yeah i tend to agree with some of the others in that u need to take more time to look at your options especialy chances to take or to mate. So just work on looking out for things like that and u will do wonders and u may need to study some opening principles again and see if u can gain something more in your arsenal ok best of luck in your other games mate and dont feel to bad about it ok i have done that to from time to time and im supose to know better hahaha....Cool

Could I have gotten a win?

Just so you all know: my opponent made some mistakes intentionally, and he helps me figure out how to take advantage of them. He could crush me at full strength.
