Hi

I'm quite new to chess and I could use some help undestanding errors in my play. Here's a recent game I played

Where did I go wrong? Now I think I could try 17. Ng4 and 18.Qh3, maybe I could try to score a mate or at least put some pressure. Any thoughts?

Hi,

For beginners it is better not to make many pawn moves in the opening. Also don't play f5 in this position it makes your king unsafe for attack. It is best to play 1-2 pawns(maybe 3 at absolute max) in the opening and develop your minor pieces(Knights and Bishops) as soon as possible.

Basiclly do this in the opening: get a grip on the centre by playing one of your centre pawns. Start developing your minor pieces and start thinking about King safefy as soon as possible. These 3 rules will help you stop loosing games fast in the opening. Just some thoughts.

Looking at first 10 moves,I guess you took away the cover of your king by moving pawns. For beginners like us,it is better to keep f,g and h pawns unmoved and castle short as quickly as possible.Moving those pawns made your king too vulnerable.

Thanks for the feedback

I was black so the f5 wasn't mine. As I look at it now you're right I made too many pawn moves and castled into a undefended positionFrown

I also think I was too passive in my attack and lost my chance and then it was defending that utterly lead to my sad demiseFrown

2. f5 is your first mistake. Seriously weakening your kingside and losing a pawn.

5. d6 defending the e pawn makes sense, but as you've already made the c6 push this is awkward.

7. g6 it's move 6 and you have not developed a single piece. You're fortunate that your opponent has made just as many useless pawn moves as you have.

Later you made tactical mistakes and it's pretty clear that these were your real undoing, you were definitely winning around move 20.
