I drew with GNU Chess 5.07 in this game as white, using xboard as an interface so I had to play it at its hardest setting. It is not the toughest chess program by a long way but it should give an expert a good game. I am no where near expert level yet but I can compete with it if I have very favourable time odds and don't rush the opening. I have gone into the later stages of the middle game with it a few times with an advantage only for me to collapse when I don't find the best route to success
Black got the early initiative but did not capitalise and I managed to achieve a superior endgame after defending for a while and then throw that away. I have replayed the game back from 37 onwards and managed to win by pushing my pawn up the kingside and then protecting it with my knight and sending the king to do the dirty work on the queenside pawns.
I want to hear some constructive criticism about all the good and bad moves for both sides.
My only concern with 38. Nd2 is lines like 38. ... Ke6 39. Kg3 Kf5 40. Kxh2 Kg4 and black winds up with two outside connected passed pawns. I still think white should win, but this is the kind of endgame I will misevaluate from time to time
ok, i am not that good, but here is my suggestion: 69 Nc2 was a mistake. instead you advance the pawn until you have king on g6 and pawn on h7 and his king on h8. then comes Nc6, Ne5, and Nf7#.
benws route to success. A very good spot by the way. I was playing this game too quickly to count the number of knight move to deliver mate on h8 and check if it was possible to leave the pawn to promote. I think I have to play more slow matches in the future. I think this would make a good puzzle but it should be posted by benws.
