Why do many average to good players still fall to this trap? Would you fall to this Italian trap if you were plaing white?

There is a very similar situation in the Fritz variation 2 Knights. Average players sometimes, good players never.
I wouldn't just because I am very careful and once a knight crosses into my territory that early, I wouldn't attack but rather defend properly.
