I'm very new...why don't i win this game?

This is a game I played as white v a computer...

If I tried to move my queen to d8 to win the game the black king was able to take it...even though it is defended by a Rooke on the same file?

I am very new to chess, so please forgive me if I have missed something obvious and even though it will be embarressing, i'd appreciate if someone could help point it out to me.

Try playing against a better computer. There was probably a glitch or something.

Under normal circumstances (i.e. always) the king capturing the queen would be illegal since the queen is protected.

It's a good idea to develop a new chess program based on your experience. When the Queen checks the King, the KIng captures the Queen. When the defender (Rook) tries to capture the King, the King automatically moves aside. The player will be shocked! But then there is a popup windows where the program can optionally be setup to normal behaviour
