in this position, why is 0-0 the most common next move?

In this position, the chess.com Game Explorer shows the most common next move for White as 0-0.   Why does this not simply lose a pawn?  Thanks for your help.

It doesn't because of the problems black will have along the e file (potential pins to the king). Play through some of the lines where it is taken.

It's not bad to take it, it's just the open rather than the closed Ruy, and can lead to the famous Berlin Wall variation.

Because white can play d4. Then, if exd4, Re1! pins the black knight to the black king. So, black is forced to play something like Nd6, after which white plays Bxc6 (removing the pawn's defender) and then dxe5.

most common move is Nc3

? No it isn't. Nc3 is played much later in the Open Ruy, and almost never in the Closed Ruy.

Thank you, all, for those helpful comments.

The most common thing that happens after 0-0 is nxe4 d4 nd6 Bxc6 dxc6 qxd8+ kxd8

Alexm421

Midjoh321 instead of nbd2 I think better is re1 and this is how the line continues, d5 nxd4 bd6 only move nxc6 bxh2 + kh1 qh4 rxe4+ dxe4 qd8+ qxd8 nxd8 kxd8 and kxh2 and white has a better endgame

alexmoore24: I'm a little confused by the line you suggest.  After dxc6, isn't Black's Knight still on d6?  If so, how can the next move be Qxd8+?  Thanks for your help.

Scottrf

This is the line:

Sorry I ment to post dxe5 nf5 and then qxd8 .

alexmoore421: yes, that makes sense to me now.  Thanks so much.

and thanks, Scottrf

If you want to avoid it, you can always play d3 before castling.

Depends what positions you feel comfortable in.

White does not lose a pawn. And the Berlin Wall is no weak defense. It does require some patience though and can be drawish. One slip can cost you mate or can be a deficit which you will not come back from.I played it for a couple of years I guess. And unlike so many openings, the black king can choose to walk over to the king or queen side.
