Is this end position winning?

1. a4 looks wrong. You create a passed pawn by advancing the unopposed pawn. There's a chance of black holding up both pawns with just one of his

Yeah a4 is strange.

on a4, isn't a5 followed by bd8 fine for black? edit: oops immed. bb6

so i think a4 makes some sense actually --- but on a4 kc6 kc4 a5 now how does white progress?

Yeah that's why I didn't suggest a5 immediately. Maybe Be7 first, I'm not sure. Maybe a4 isn't bad, it's just not normally the recommended way to advance the pawns.

Why not Bd2 followed by Bc3 for White?

I love that I liked the same trick as the US correspondence champion.

I don't understand this talk about 1. a4  Suggest in the diagram #48 Black's bishop is better placed. But Black cannot trade bishops as the pawn end game is a easy win for White.

So.  1. Bd2  followed by 2. Bc3  and the Black bishop will have to give way.

Also suggest that the player who agreed to a draw practice this end game with a strong player and very quickly he will see the ideas on how to win.

There is a special pill he should also take which will help him clear his head for chess. [I think it is legal]  it is called 20 mg an-ti-gul-libi-li-ty pill.

Just take one every 4 hours while thinking about chess.
