impressive mate with Knight and Bishop. Well done

SupremeChessFailure

yes but can you 2 knights mate

blackcat11

Hey, I don’t see why you would promote to a knight there, it’s kinda taunting. But on another note, with optimal play you can check mate with Bishop and Knight in 17 moves. If you can do it with 20 moves or less than that would be impressive. Good job on getting it done.

If you're going to show off by under-promoting to a KBNK ending, you should at least display some technique; 64.Bc2 would have sealed the opponent's king behind the b1-h7 diagonal and then it's definitely not a mate in 31.

Cool

You can checkmate with Bishop and Knight in 0 moves from some positions, but from some others you'll need at least 33 unless your opponent helps (and from some others you ain't going to make it at all).

You missed 26. Qg7# mate in 1 xD

The B+N checkmate was nice though - it is just less intriguing when the checkmate is done by intentionally underpromoting. This endgame is much more rare to come up naturally in a chess game - although I've been on both sides of this checkmate many times before.

When I have the B+N side, I can usually get the checkmate:

Yes lol - here is an older video of mine where I actually teach this checkmate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPDvEC4zl1o

Brayden, nice!

It can be done in 17 moves from any position on the board, not sure where you got 33 moves, ive done it in 19 or 18, never had to do it in a real game, so who knows how long it would take. Good Job Brayden, I like this topic.

It can be done but it is not forced. To achieve that particular mate, you need the losing side to be forced to move a pawn to avoid stalemate.

Here is a good place to get 33 moves.

The DTM value shown top right (66) is the minimum number of moves by both sides required to force mate against the most obstinate defence. White makes half of the moves i.e. 33.

If you don't believe it, try mating from that position on the board provided, playing the top Black move shown after each of your moves, then count how many moves you took.

It obviously can't be done from any position on the board in whatever number of moves you choose. Do you think you could mate me in 17 moves as White here?

Either side to play
EndgameEnthusiast2357

It can take up to 36 moves with perfect play.

Not true.

White to play and mate in 7

Which pawn would Black be forced to move?

Not true even if the opponent has only a pawn.

Either side to play and mate in 11

White to mate cannot afford to let Black move his pawn.

What? You don't believe the bishop and knight tablebases either???

EndgameEnthusiast2357

Of course I am not including immediate fork positions. At most 36 moves from non-drawn positions.

MARattigan

@EndgameEnthusiast2357

Except it's not 36, it's 33.

And the draws don't necessarily come from immediate fork positions. The position I posted in #16 isn't an immediate fork position.

Neither is this

White to play

Nor this

(Surprising how few people are aware that in the bishop and knight endgame a draw can be forced in 36 moves from any position on the board.)
