I don't like 10. d5

TheOldReb

10 d5      is the most played move in this position in my database and scores 56%  for white thile

10 Be3  scores 58% and is the second most played

I have played the black side of this position and I see 10 d5  much more than  10 Be3

DjMeredith

Yeah i was looking at Be3 looks more natural to me.

10. Be3 exd4 11. cxe4

Whats the draw back with something like that?

TheOldReb

After  10 Be3 exd4  11 cxd4  d5 gives only a slight edge to white and 11 cxd4  Na5  12 Bc2  c5  is also a slight edge to white  ( 12 e5 !? )

TheOldReb

Those who like to play with a more closed position will play  10 d5  and those who don't will play  10 Be3 , its just a question of style/preference

princejher

the choice between d5 and Be3 is a matter of preference. d5 is more on playing positional in a closed variation of the ruy lopez while Be3 is gearing for a tactical game inviting the exchange of the black's knight for one of white's bishop.

thank you all for your viewing my post.

Thanks for the game Prince. I am still a novice so my question may seem trivial, but how did you know at move 5 he wasn't going to take your undefended pawn.

Thank you.

5...Nxe4 is quite playable for black and has been championed in the past by such greats as Bent Larsen and Viktor Korchnoi. It's called the Open defense to the Ruy and scores about the same as the more usual 5...Be7.
