Low-level area tournaments

I've recently gone to an area tournament w/my team members, and i was shocked at the level of the other competitors. Here's an example slaughter:

As you can see, Chicago is filled with these noobs who strut around saying how they'll be the next bobby fischer...

I can't tell if you're trying to impress people or make fun of someone, but either way, you've got the wrong idea.

How does that saying go?

"There will always be someone better than you, and there will always be someone worse than you."

Something like that, anyway.

I think he's just saying he expected better level of play on an official tournament.  I've  seen better performance from  10 year olds...

I agree. There's really no reason to post the entire game after 2 ... Qh4, let alone annotate this silly game. Plus, the fact that he missed 14 Qxf5# speaks volumes.

After this "tournament", i was wondering if most middle schools are like this. And from kingfisher, he's right, 10 year olds can play better, these guys were 12,13, some 14 year olds. They even had chess tutors, I asked a couple of them

Considering you missed mate in one move 4 times its just as well they had only just started playing.Tongue out

Terms like noob should be left for video games , this is not how you behave or talk like when playing chess. I guess you are young , you will still learn that in chess you must have humility as there is always someone ( many , many people ) better than you . Doesn't matter if this was a tournament , you should show respect to all your opponents no matter their skill

Where is a good place to find out about area tournaments?  I never really looked because I always thought the level of competition would be too high.

Thanks in advance...

oh, area tournaments are plentiful everywhere. Just go to your local chess club or school club. Usually the club will host a mini-tournament to decide the chess team members.
