My first Tournament game

I play a lot of blitz and bullet chess on this site. I don't play much otb chess because I don't really have anyone to play with. And I don't play too many long games simply because of the time constraints in my life with 2 young kids at home, a pretty hectic job, and a reasonably long commute in and out of NYC during the week.

With that being said, I joined a tournament here on Chess.com along with some other members of a group I joined for fans of the Scotch opening. So far I've only completed 1 game in the tournament and I've included it down below. I chose to play the Goring Gambit and I wonder if any of you would be kind enough to offer your thoughts. I won the game, and felt reasonably good throughout. But I always feel like I'm missing so much, that there are so many better options available than the ones I see. . . I'd love to know if you guys can point out some things I missed.

My feelings about "missing things" is mostly based on the idea of playing a gambit like the one played here. I feel that it is a MUST to press the developmental advantage gained from the gambit and really never let up. I'm just not sure that I played that way in this game. Yes, I won, but I'm not so sure that my play was good enough, strong enough, sharp enough, etc. to warrant playing this type of opening.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks,

Ted

I'm not a great analyzer, but after a quick glance through the first couple moves, it seems to me 8. exc3 is better than 8. Qxc3 because it keeps the pressure along that extremely strong diagonal, possibly eyeing up a kingside attack in sync with the knight chilling on f3.

Also, it seemed black had a solid advantage until 27. Rh5 b5?. Because of that move I think you lucked out in the endgame.

Anyway, again, I'm not much for analysis, but those are my 2 cents.

8exc3 does look promising, good find, thanks. I'm curious as to why you thought black was ahead until the mistake at 27 . . .b5? Was it bc of the extra pawn or did you feel black was better positionally?

Thanks!
