Need tips on game
I realize now that as time was running low, I quickly decided to get an extra queen instead of putting him in check with my rook and then trading it with his rook first. With two against one rook, I could've won easily.

You got the right idea with checking.. but you mate him not trade down.
47. Ra7+ Rb7 48. Rxb7+ Kf8 49. Qxg7+ Ke8 50. Qe7#

Ok, where to begin? You picked a terrible opening. After 3.e4, he has twice the odds you do at winning. Learn the Queen's Gambit: Accepted system and the Queen's Gambit: Declined system. Looking only at the first 12 moves, you moved your QN six times! You make no effort to develop any other pieces, relying soley on your lonely knight to do your work. BTW, he missed taking your free bishop on move 6. [6...Qxb5]
You handed black h-file in a gift-wrapped box on 19; he failed to trade you bishops on 22; you abandoned your king on 29 in the face of imposing danger. At least you pulled your one and only trap on his queen. And the previous poster is correct: once you've traded some pieces, go for that king! I hate to be harsh, but he did not play even close to his rating.
I'm a firm believer in getting a good, positionally sound opening put together as quickly as possible. Limping into the middle game is a recipe for disaster. A good rule of thumb for the opening is don't move a piece more than twice (there are exceptions). And I try to avoid major swaps until all my boys are in place.

Hey Salient24 :-)
It's a very good thing to analyze one's losses like you are. It's nice that you've already seen a better move for yourself! Here's a line that builds on what SerbianChessStar pointed out.

I want to focus on your strengths as well as your weaknesses, because there are some things that you did that were very right.

Thanks for sharing your game! I had fun analyzing it. I hope you learned something! :-)

Some general pointers:
1. It is usually better to develop knights before bishops.
2. It is usually a good idea to control open files with your rooks.
3. Before every move, consider all possible checks from your opponent and all possible captures. Play them out in your head or on the analysis board to see where they lead. Then play your move.

After each move your opponent makes look where his piece can now move. This obvious tip can save you from many blunders

Just a quick note, Black cannot take the bishop on move 6 because of 7. Nc7+, forking the king and queen.

Ah yes. Now Black's move 6 makes a lot more sense!

47.Qxf5+ Kg8 (or Ke8, it doesn't matter) 48.Ra8+ Rb8 49.Rxb8# is mate... So Ra7+ is not the best move, Qxf5+ is as it mates by force.

The Russians got this one right: openings come least and last. Always focus more on tactics than openings. Having said that, you should know the basic ideas of a few openings from both sides of the board, enough to get you into a playable middlegame. A great tactics website is chesstempo.com. It's free, and you can solve positions against the clock, or just normally. I definitely recommend it, and if you only have limited chess study time, study tactics!
Good luck!

Real simple friend
You moved your queen night like a million times in the opening.
Develop as many pieces as possible in the opening.
Once you have control of the center plan a attack. You decide how !
Go and get some tutorials on Checkmate and the End Game.
And FINALLY always look to play defensively.
Hope i didnot hurt your feelings but i am being honest and you asked for info.
I just came to this site and the players here are a lot tougher than any other site i have dominated.
I hope this info helps your game greatly and Good Luck !
Always play defensively? Being too passive is a large mistake that can cost you the game. Being defensive is not as good as being aggresive and then if nessisary defending!
The only problem with that is the goal is to kill the leader. People will ignore the defender and go straight for the leader not caring if they die or not.
Where as Execution/warzone. You are always a target. You need to be on your toes the whole game. On top of that your only given one life per round, so people will try as hard as they can so they don't die.. Acai Max Cleanse
