First of all welcome to chess.com! My advice is to have a good look around mate on chess.com site, there is so much info about how to improve from the books that help to the general advice on improving ur game. Then there is the things that chess.com site gives/offers u such as chess mentor, tactics trainer for eg. So have mate with all that first...Cool

I would reccomend playing an unrated game against a player that has the time and patience to show you the ropes. And who will not just destroy you in 5 moves, there are some very good mentors out there. But I agree with littleman, browse around read and explore, then play someone. But most important of all, every game win or lose is a learning experince. And that patience is a must, also listening and understanding are very important. I am not very good myself, but I am slowly learning to improve my game. But I would be happy to accept a challenge if you are looking for an opponent. Best of luck and have fun.
