Hello, I want help with a position and I want to know the best move AND its reasoning. Here is the FEN: r1bq1rk1/ppp2ppp/2np1n2/2b1p3/4P3/1BPP1N2/PP3PPP/RNBQ1RK1 b - - 3 7. Again I can find the best move using an engine, it is the reasoning behind the move that I want. If this is not a good place to post this question, please direct me to a suitable place

Why can't you post the position using the game editor?

notmtwain

I guess it is Black's move.

I play this variation of the Italian opening myself, and recently learned that the best move in this position is a5, for the reason that we are giving our bishop the a2 square to retreat to if the opponent plays Na5, giving the bishop a good position. Keep in mind that Be6, challenging our light squared bishop is not good due to Bxe6, fxe6, and then Qb3. Hope this helped! happy.png

oh wait, you were looking for the best move for black?

aalv

I saw this position with white facing us and assumed we were white

shehab-ellithy

Yeah, it is black, sorry for the confusion ( it is my first forum post ever)

The FEN says it is Black's move.

Yes, it is black's move (i have posted a game diagram). Now, can you please tell me why a6 is the best move ( according to nextchessmove.com)

notmtwain

null

Thank you @notmtwain, but do you know the REASONING behind the move a6, what is the theory?

notmtwain

I think it implies that black sees d4 coming next and  wants a retreat for the bishop.

Strangemover

White is most likely going to attack your bishop on c5, possibly by Bc2 then b4 and a4 or even Nc4. a6 gives you the a7 square to keep your bishop safe on the important diagonal.

Thank you very much @strangemover and @notmtwain for your responses, I appreciate them.

ohh lmao. Usually when I play the position, I play a5 instead of Bb3. a5 gives better control for the bishop, and a retreat square.
