Opening: Beginner's level

Hello everyone. So I started playing chess a little over a month ago. I just played a game now where I thought I opened OK, and then -- all of a sudden -- I was under pressure.

I feel like this happens to me a fair amount, but I'm not sure where I go wrong. If you can give me any ideas on the opening of this game, maybe that will help?

I played with black. Is this just what to expect as black?

Any help is much appreciated.

Also, some of you might suggest studying openings. The thing is, with games at my level we usually deviate from the standard ones very quickly.

Hi, I suggest studying and practice tactics: fork, double attacks, discovered attacks, blocking, etc...

I,m no expert, but in your game you fail to see a fork with his pawn and that makes you lose a piece. It has nothing to do with your opening, which was not that bad. Tactics make you improve a lot at this level, while studying openings will be frustrating because, as you say, you will usually deviate from main lines.

If you play e4 e5 openings, you will get a lot of idiotic and infantile deviations from book, on both ends (at least at the club level).

Try taking up the French defense, or the Caro Kahn, if you want to avoid the immediate pitfalls of a tactical brawl over the center.

Connect your rooks by move 10. See how well it worked for your opponent?

Ok thank you for the suggestions. I'll try to connect rooks faster, study tactis, and maybe try some different openings.

At our level we have a lot to learn but castling let you down here. Also, you lost a tempo on move 8 and walked your bishop straight into a trap.

I see your comment I figure I'll protect my d5 pawn with my knight.

I recommend protecting your pieces if you want to attack yourself.

What's wrong with 8...exd4? Apparently nothing- Black is two pawns up for very little.

Ok I see now that move 8 could have been better. Thanks again!

True, 8...exd4 was a good option (but studying openings will not help you find this movement, thats tactics).

Also, 10 Nxe5 Nxe5 is a blunder, that leads to the fork where you lose a piece. 10 Nxe5 0-0 is better and you would be even.

Again, you will not find these kind of movements in an opening book. Studying tactics will help a lot though.
