The first is the checkmate by my opponent. The second position is where I assumed that I could take his queen because his bishop is pinned by my rook. But the game wouldn't let me.

While a piece subject to an absolute pin cannot move, it can still deliver check, so capturing Black's Queen with your King is an illegal move. You cannot move your King into check.
How can I not take the queen with my king? The black is bishop is pinned by my rook. And the queen isn't protected by any other piece. Does anybody have an answer?
