It's because debates about its soundness drag on and on.
lol
I saw no real flaws in your analysis, but I think Black didn't do to great after h5.
The Dragon got it's name from the shape of Black's kingside pawns, which resembled the constellation Draco (Dragon).
The problem with that argument is that it isn't always worth fight (my time is worth more than the small probability that I'll draw), and that resignation is an option. Feel free to resign or not resign whenever you want, you're the one whom's time gets wasted.
I dont mean to be rude but when i read that you 'analyzed' your friends game i thought the analysis would include more annotation. The only commentary on the game is about the opening and nothing else is explained. Yes, some variations are provided but to someone ranked 1600 that could be useless information if left unexplained. I am going to say that anyone can download fritz 5.32 here and see the alternative lines and find out if they missed any winning chances but things like the classic exchange sac on c3 in the sicilian is pretty important and well... i just think things could have been explained a little better so more people could enjoy the game. (people of all levels)
Anyone agree with me? more inexperienced players perhaps? (#incl 1600`s because i analysed a game here between 2 1600 players and i honestly dont think they understood middlegame play and the eventual winner was most likly because of blunder or some tactics 'fell into place'.)
16. Rxh6?? why not 16. g5, forking the knight and bishop?
I think black 3... cxd4 won the game. White should have avoided a Queen-side Castle after that. Also Moves 12 through 13 were good for black and bad for white.
White says, "This is my plan", [h4]
then black says, "it won't work"... [Rfc8]
then white should have said,
"OK, maybe it won't",[Nd5] but white said,
"Yeah it will" [h5]... and white was wrong.
lol

Why allow Black to take a pawn out with his piece? The fork also gives Black the option of which piece to lose. I think the immediate capture is much better.

You're arguing against the main line of the Sicilian, Dragon variation.

The powerful Yugoslav Attack calls for a long castle. How else will White make the pawn storm work?

also, giving up the exchange with 13 ... Rxh5 would have lost a little material, but created a breeze in Blacks castle... not a good idea, but I would have been very uneasy with whites position after move 12.
I couldn't disagree with you more.
"Resignation is'nt an option"
Scroll down a touch in your game window. It's right next to 'offer draw.'
From the game position after 10.O-O-O , the 1970's mainline was: 10...Rc8 11.Bb3 Ne5 12.h4 Nc4 13.Bxc4 Rxc4 14.h5 Nxh5 15.g4 Nf6 16.Nde2 Qa5 17.Bh6 Bxh6 18.Qxh6 Rfc8 19.Rd3 where WT is winning, as in Karpov-Korchnoi 1974 key game. In that sequence, playing g4 before h5 is too slow for WT to mount a successful mating attack.
But in the Thomas-Hallman game above, where Qa5 then Rfc8 are played, 13.g4 becomes viable and advantageous. It is helpful to WT that he no longer need worry about BL having a Rf8 after the moves h5/h5xg6 fxg6 also. [And it may come to trouble BL having setup a fork of his K & R if Nxe7+ is ever played, which is why it was later attempted to allow the Bh8 reply to Bh6 by moving Rfe8 instead of Rfc8 ]
Alternately, WT can play for simpler advantage there after:
13. h5 Nxh5 14. Nd5 Qxd2+ 15. Rxd2 Kf8 16. g4 Nf6 17. Rdh2 Nxd5 18. Bxd5
Later on BL might have answered 15.Bh6 by Bh8, such being the original reason for trying to use the Rfc8 rather than the older Rac8. But having his h-file open, WT has the option to play Qh2 without Bh6. Or a well timed Nf5.
I analyzied my friend's game for him, but I'm not that fimiliar with the Dragon. Check over it and see if I missed anything. Thanks.
