Silly engines, positional sacks are for humans!

The following position was shown to me by a friend of mine this past weekend. He had this position as black.

Let me say a few things before I talk about this position.

I don't have the best hardware or best engines ever at the moment so I'd like to hear the opinions of you engine junkies of this position.

From my experience, the position is simply great for white despite the engine evaluation of +.2, which is the WRONG move given by the comp.

Bxb4, while leading to a nice position for white is simply not the best move.

The best move for white is the obvious, human exchange sacrifice axb4! After this move imo, black is much worse, very close to being lost I feel like.

This is all a guess of course. I don't actually know if this the real evaluation, but my gut feeling tells me that this is the case.

And here we have the classic example of an engine not being able to look at the position and properly evaluate it.

The comp gives it as a flat 0.00, but this is a nonsensical evaluation.

The comp then gives black two playable moves with a5 and Qxb2

12..Qxb2

There are possibly many improvements by both sides, but in the end, I feel as though white, eventually, should end having a decisive advantage, in computer terms.

12...a5

Again I don't have the best or most modern engines to confirm this, so it's an educated hunch. Let's see if anyone can prove whether I am right or wrong.

Of course, if we dont have engines, I think we can all agree that white has at least dangerous compensation, but I think its more than this.

Why wouldn't you download last Stockfish and check by yourself?

Stockfish on my computer which goes about 4400 kN per second, gives an evaluation of +0.89 for 7. dxc5 and +0.53 for 7. d5 after a couple of minutes of calculating. All other white moves lead to a preferable position for black.

After 10...d3, Stockfish shows +0.61

But yeah, just because 7.dxc5 is better for white does not mean I would play this position as well as 7. d5

The first line after 16...Kc7 is OK for Black (about equal). It would be winning for white without that stupid c4 pawn. It would also be the first line to consider as white, but I did not manage to find where/if white gets an advantage.

So, 11.Bxb4 is the right move, after which white has a risk-free small advantage.

Surprised

It's always a balance. We need to be sceptical of engines, aware of their flaws, but they can also be very useful. We don't want to automatically accept or reject computer moves based on just a cursory look at the position but rather keep an open mind.

I think this is really flexible thinking by you. The thing is you could be right that the engine is wrong, but it can be really hard to look so deeply into the future when evaluating a position. It's one thing to say your plan in theory is to do a kingside attack and it's quite another to execute it in practice. White's attack may or may not be as easy as it seems.
