How did I get a stalemate when I clearly was about to win??

If the opponent has nowhere to move and is not in check, then it is a stalemate.

The problem is that you don't know what stalemate is.

But how is it a draw? Should I be the winner?

Okay I did some reading into what you shared Thankyou soo much! I didn’t know this I used to play as a kid it’s been years soo naturally I don’t remember most of the rules I still find it kinda unfair and frustrating that the game works that way I clearly had the upper hand at the end of the game but I guess I shouldn’t of tried to trap his king that forced me too get the stalemate soo next time I’ll try to be more patient and asses the board and where the opponent can go I appreciate your help!

If you are heavily down on pieces, you would be relieved to know that stalemate is still possible as an avenue to avert a loss. If you consider the scenario from your opponent's point of view, he will be happy that he drew a game which he would otherwise have lost. It gives the losing side a hope to play on.
