Strangulation Tactics

This is a repost of an article, as some members had difficulty accessing the pdf I had posted elsewhere and linked to the article here.

Well as the title suggests, this game is filled with it. White starts the attack as early as move 7 and the pressure continues to build on black.  Black for its share, with a beautiful move, complicates the position making capturing sequences critical.  White relentlessly attacks, with literally every move and keeps black on the defensive.  I have also tried to include some chess guidance, which should help you in understanding the practicality of the guidance.  Hope you will enjoy this game and benefit from it.

A beautiful game that I loved every moment.  When analyzing the game for this annotation, I noticed a very strange fact; that black moved beyond the 5th rank only twice, once while exchanging the queens and again playing an inconsequential 32...d4.  An engrossing game of chess, where black was strangled to death in its own courtyard.

9. ...Ne8 is incorrect.  9... Ng4 10.Bf4 Nc6 wins that pushed pawn.

Quite a few players would have opted for material when it was easily available... Nicely done..

What would black initiate the trade of queens on move 8 and give up the file? I would have waited for white to come down.

White is not forced to exchange queens.  By not taking the queen, black needs to move the knight...where to now?  definitely not e8, d7 blocks the queen, h5 is weak...so again g4 also adding pressure on e5 white responding with Qe2 with the intention of Rd1, when black is forced to give up the file.

 9 ... Ne8 may deserve a ? but 9 ... Ng4 10 Bf4 Nc6 does not win the pawn so easily. 11 e6!? fe6 12 Bc7 gets a pawn back with an interesting board.
