There are 32 squares on your opponent's side. Just look for ones that are awkward for the opponent's pieces to touch. You know, like it might take a knight or bishop 5 moves just to get there.
And to use the rook on the 7th rank again, lets say you're ready to jump on the 7th and win a ton of pawns... if only it weren't for that pesky knight. But then you see you can pin it and capture it.
IMO it's better to think of creating target like that than some kind of mystical power only GMs have.
